1. Compare different payment methods

Most of the time, sending money from your bank account can be cheaper than paying from your debit or credit card. Compare what fees is being charged for each payment method and pick the cheapest one if possible. For example, play with the below Wise Money Calculator and see which payment method turns to be the cheapest.

2. Save money with delayed transfer

Often times the instant money transfer is more expensive than the delayed transfer. So, if you can afford to wait for few days for your money to get deposited in your overseas bank account, you might get a better rate or incur low transfer fee. See below the example where Remitly’s economy service takes 3-6 days to deposit money but the rate is higher.

5. Be careful while using Credit Card as payment method

Sending money by credit card may be accounted as Cash advance and may incur high charges on your credit card statement. Check out the terms carefully before using credit card as the payment method to confirm whether it will be a cash advance or a regular bill payment.

6. Best rate vs Trustworthiness

Be sure the service provider you are using to send money abroad is trustworthy or there is a chance you might end up losing your money. While you will be tempted to pick the service that is offering you the best rate, it is important to carry out due diligence and confirm that the service provider is legit.

7. Cheapest may not be the best

Besides the exchange rate, there can be many other factors that you should take into account while picking the best option. Does the service provider have an easy-to-use website/app? How is the technical support in case of any help required? Do they provide 24*7 support?

8. Read customer reviews

Go through the customer reviews and testimonials to see what existing customers have to say about the respective Money transfer provider. If most of the existing customers have expressed similar concern in the reviews, it is definitely a red flag.
